  3. Compact is a high speed compression/decompression program that works
  4. best on large files (>1 meg compressed).  On such files, it runs
  5. 2-3 times faster than the public domain compress program, and compresses
  6. better.
  7.  
  8. Compact is PUBLIC DOMAIN, but due to potential patent problems,
  9. this program may only be used for research into data compression
  10. techniques.  See WARNING section in compact(1) manual page for
  11. further discussion.

  13. The program currently compiles w/o any special options on all
  14. system V UNIX releases known to the author which provide at least
  15. 1 Meg of uniformly addressable memory.  It will not run on machines
  16. (eg 286) with 16 bit integers or 64K segments.
